Jeremy Gilley, an Australian actor turned filmmaker, started Peace One Day in 1999. Its mission is to win broad international governmental support for the institutionalization of Peace Day on September 21st, a day of international cease fire, thereby, “making it a day that is self-sustaining, an annual day of global unity, a day of intercultural cooperation on a scale that humanity has never known.”

Dr. William F. Vendley, Secretary General of Religions for Peace, highlights the importance of the religious voice in a movement that invites people to come together for peace from all corners of the world. “We religious people have a special responsibility,” Dr. Vendley says. He continues, “We have visions of peace, and the call to be peace makers in our own faiths.”

Gilley explains that his vision for Peace One Day is hooked around a simple idea of creating a single day that uplifts and focuses on intercultural cooperation, on peace, and on the reality that we are in it together. Peace One Day shares a deep concern for working with all people through the values widely shared and deeply held that allow us to come together and live peaceably. “Peace isn’t simply the absence of conflict,” Dr. Vendley sums up, “it’s that positive state of well-being, that harmony among all of us, and the mystery of existence. Each of our traditions understands that peace is a gift.”
