Cuando yo tenía 18 años, comencé a involucrarme en la colaboración interreligiosa para la construcción de la paz, y aprendí sobre la importancia de crear un movimiento sustentable y duradero. Gracias al apoyo de líderes religiosos de diversas expresiones de fe, yo he trabajado por el movimiento interreligioso durante 10 años, con profundo compromiso por continuar el legado de las generaciones pasadas, viendo hacia el futuro.

En estos 10 años, he aprendido sobre la importancia de la participación de los jóvenes y personas de todas las edades, enfocándonos en la colaboración intergeneracional, para apreciar las identidades, perspectivas y experiencias únicas de las diversas generaciones al involucrarse en el movimiento. Cada una de las generaciones experimentamos realidades únicas y por tanto nuestras contribuciones son sustanciales, asi como tambien las personas adultas contribuyen con su valiosa sabiduría, y los jóvenes con su innovación, mi esperanza es que estemos abierto a aprender el uno del otro, a transmitir los conocimientos y a facilitar las posiciones de liderazgo para los jóvenes, siendo conscientes de que somos impermanentes y la vida es corta, por lo que si nosotros pasamos el liderazgo y conocimiento a los jóvenes, el movimiento podrá ser duradero y sustentable. Cuando nuestra vida se termine, nuestro legado continuará porque supimos cómo transmitir todo lo que somos a las próximas generaciones. Para mi, el movimiento interreligioso es una labor de compasión infinita, un movimiento que continua en todas las formas y generaciones, hasta lograr florecer a través de los años. La transmisión de estos valores son en común en las diversas religiones, que han sabido preservar los conocimientos y ser sustentables.

Además de la colaboración interreligiosa, he aprendido sobre la infinita sabiduría de las diversidades en todas sus formas, incluyendo entre ellas, la diversidad sexual, étnica, geográfica, lingüística, entre muchas otras. Y es en la diversidad lingüística donde he encontrado una oportunidad de mejorar como el movimiento interreligioso tiene la capacidad de trabajar con todos los idiomas, creando espacios multilingües, donde se vive la justicia lingüística, como parte de este reconocimiento y apreciación de las diversas formas de comunicarnos.

He sido voluntario para ayudar en la interpretación y traducción de conexiones en diversas organizaciones, donde he aprendido que tenemos un futuro inspirador en el que podemos trabajar. Contamos en la actualidad con diversas herramientas tecnológicas para integrar la diversidad lingüística en todas nuestras reuniones, y cada uno de nosotros podemos servir en el acompañamiento de las personas que se integran. Muchos de nosotros hablamos más de un idioma, así que al servir como traductores estamos desarrollando compasión.

En mi experiencia propia, cuando he estado en espacios monolingües, ha sido difícil para mí comunicarme y expresar todo lo que soy. Considero que el idioma en el que nos comunicamos tiene un gran impacto en nuestras vidas, ya que en muchas ocasiones es la forma en la que nos conectamos de manera particular con personas que amamos. Yo hablo español con mi familia y esposo, así que cuando fui capaz de comunicarse en español en espacios interreligiosos, experimenté una conexión especial.

Mientras trabajamos y desarrollamos compasión, son nuestras acciones sociales las que generan un impacto muy significativo en nuestras comunidades locales, nacionales y globales. La compasión me invita a actuar en iniciativas que atienden causas por el bien común, como la justicia social. Es así que he aprendido de mi actual trabajo en Arizona Faith Network, en la acción social para el bien común. He sido testigo de el cambio social de las diversas religiones cuando deciden trabajar juntas, por ejemplo en el programa de Centros de alivio del calor que tenemos en Arizona, los cuales son parte de la Red de alivio del calor, en la que los gobiernos, universidades y organizaciones basadas en la fe estamos colaborando para asistir a las personas que más sufren por el calor extremo de Arizona. En cada centro hemos recibido un alto número de personas que están en busca de un refugio y alivio, por lo que nosotros como religiones tenemos un compromiso ético sustancial de nuestra teología.

La acción social es una oportunidad de mejora que tenemos en el movimiento interreligioso, elevando nuestra capacidad para dialogar y transportar nuestra sabiduría a la acción por el bien común.

Mi profunda esperanza es que cada uno de nosotros que somos parte del movimiento interreligioso aprendamos a innovar y trabajar hacia el futuro, reconociendo que nuestra participación es valiosa y una parte importante para el futuro de este movimiento. Y para todas las personas que están conociendo y todavía no son parte del movimiento interreligioso, que ellas siempre se sientan bienvenidas e integradas, que sepan que son valiosas y que las necesitamos para continuar caminando por la paz.

Todos y cada uno de nosotros somos indispensables para este movimiento, con esperanza de que el movimiento interreligioso sea integral de todas las diversidades, mis intenciones son que todos los seres sean felices.

Many Languages, Many Actions

When I was 18, I began to get involved in interfaith collaboration to promote peacebuilding, and learned about the importance of creating a sustainable and lasting movement. Thanks to the support of religious leaders of diverse expressions of faith, I have worked within the interfaith movement for 10 years, with a deep commitment to continue the legacy of past generations, while also embracing new ideas looking to the future.

Leadership, Both Young and Old

In these last 10 years, I have come to understand the importance of having youth and people of all ages participate in the interfaith movement– and having intergenerational collaboration – We need to appreciate the unique identities, perspectives, and experiences of diverse generations when engaging in the movement. Each generation experiences unique realities that make their contribution to interfaith dialogue and action substantial. Adults contribute wisdom from their experiences and lessons learned and young people contribute innovation and passion for creating a better world.  

My hope is that we are open to learning from each other. For the sake of transmitting knowledge while being aware that we are impermanent and life is short, it’s important to create leadership positions for young people so that the interfaith movement (and the collective intergenerational wisdom it carries) can be long-lasting and sustainable. When our life is over, our legacy can continue if we know how to transmit everything we are to the next generations. For me, the interfaith movement is a work of infinite compassion, a movement that continues in all forms and generations, until it manages to flourish through the years. The transmission of these values is common among various religions, which have known how to preserve knowledge and be sustainable.

A Space Where Everyone Can Be Heard  

Through my interfaith work, I have also learned about the infinite wisdom of diversities in all their forms, including sexual, ethnic, geographic, and linguistic diversity. Linguistic diversity is where I see an opportunity for the interfaith movement to improve its capacity to work across difference. Creating multilingual spaces where linguistic justice is fostered is a fundamental part of recognizing and appreciating diverse forms of communication, and therefore also ways of thinking and being.

I have volunteered to help interpret and translate between communities across various organizations. In doing so, I have learned there is an inspiring future we can work towards. Today we have various technological tools to integrate linguistic diversity in all of our meetings, and each of us can serve to support the people who join and speak languages other than our own. Many of us speak more than one language and can serve as translators. By doing so we are developing a unique form of compassion.

From my own experience, it has been difficult for me to communicate and express all that I am when I’ve been in monolingual spaces. I believe that the language in which we communicate has a great impact on our lives, as it is the means through which we connect with the people we care about and love. I speak Spanish with my family and husband, so when I am able to communicate in Spanish in interfaith spaces, I experience a deeper connection with the people there.

Amplifying Social Impact

As we seek to develop a compassionate world, we must give special attention to our social actions and the very significant impact they have on our local, national and global communities. Compassion invites me to be involved in initiatives that address issues of social justice. I’ve had the privilege of learning this through my work with Arizona Faith Network as an Interfaith Coordinator, where we prioritize social action for the common good.

I have witnessed incredible social change occurs when different religions decide to work together. One example, is the Heat Relief Center program that we have in Arizona, which is part of the Heat Relief Network, in which governments, universities and faith-based organizations are collaborating to assist those who are suffering the most from Arizona's extreme heat. In each Center we receive a high number of people who are seeking refuge and relief, and its been wonderful to see members of religious communities living up to the ethical commitment to serve based on each of our unique theologies.

My deep hope is that each of us who are part of the interfaith movement learn to innovate and work toward the future, recognizing that our participation is a valuable and important part of the future of this movement. And for all the people who are meeting and are not yet part of the interfaith movement, know that you are welcome, that we value your work, and that we need you to continue walking for peace.

Each and every one of us is indispensable to this movement. I hope that the interreligious movement is integral to all diversities so that all beings can be happy.
