Write for TIO: Guidelines and Compensation

Thank you for your interest in writing for The Interfaith Observer (TIO). TIO invites creative, insightful, and talented writers.

Guidelines

  1. Article Length: 800-2000 words.

  2. Themes: Inquire with TIO’s co-editors, Tahil Sharma and Megan Anderson, at TIO@seattleu.edu about the latest journal theme.

  3. Audience: TIO has a broad audience, so be inclusive across age, gender, culture, ethnicity, race, nationality, and those who may know very little or quite a lot about the interfaith movement.

  4. Purpose:  To provide a platform and library of articles that highlight how the interfaith movement is being lived out in the world. We seek to uplift the stories of people and organizations at the grassroots, highlighting interfaith relationships, culture, and the critical issues the interfaith movement faces today.

  5. What TIO does Seek: Stories that engage the intersectionality of the interfaith movement around various themes and issues and help readers reflect upon and evaluate the purpose and role of religion and the interfaith movement in society, as well as the writer’s own part in shaping the movement.

    • Do include interdisciplinary references, insights from popular culture, timely cultural questions, and thoughtful responses.

    • Do include art, images, and/or photographs related to their piece. Please source images and provide links if relevant. Online images must be free for public use. A few great sources include Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay.

    • TIO invites writers to speak from their heart about their experiences and insights in the interfaith movement while being sure that their article speaks to a specific matter that affects individuals and communities.

  6. What TIO does not Seek:  Book reviews, poetry, Academic journals, Self-promotion pieces, Confessions or personal journal entries, or Solely feel-good narrative articles (e.g., Why is peace important?).

Compensation:

TIO pays $75.00 USD per journal article to writers we publish. TIO also regularly asks writers to participate in a brief audio podcast-style interview about their writing and interest. Writers are provided with a link to share on social media – for both the journal article and podcast. Writers are expected to promote content widely within their social media network.
